Found this on rhythmbox FAQ

Some of my mp3s will not play. They give me a "Could not find media type" dialog box. Why is this?

Some mp3s are not detected properly by GStreamer . Check to see if you have the recommended version of 0.6.4, then submit a bug report with a location link to the mp3 that isn't detected correctly. Also, keep on the lookout for files that have .mp3 extensions on them but are really just wave files.

Not sure if it will help

Pete

Nah from what I heard, there is a plugin you need to download to enable mp3 support in rhythmbox...
I think it's called gstreamer-plugin-mp3... Try a search on rpm.pbone.net or on google...

If you don't need a graphical mp3 player, just download madplay... it's a great text-based mp3 player.

I know that with xmm there is a plug in that is needed cause redhat doesn't support mp3 playback out the box. If you findthis please post it as i am looking for the plug in for Rhythmbox 0.8.3 right now as well

dag wieers (www.dag.wieers.com) has an mp3 plugin for xmms called, strangely enough, xmms-mp3. If you use apt you can apt-get install xmms-mp3. Or, if you're feeling adventurous, you can remove the redhat xmms and recompile xmms from source from xmms.sf.net.

Personally I recompile from source. And I know it's a drag but mp3 being patented and all is a bit of a sore point with me at the moment - I'm burning all my stuff to oggvorbis.

haven't had any luck with the rhythmbox gstreamer-plugins-mp3 yet (I'm using FC2-x86_64)

Talking Found it!

I found it gstreamer-plugins-mp3 here: http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/2/i386/RPMS.testing/ linked from this blog: http://pearcec.com/

Oh, and it works.

Hope that helps.

Nick.

Well I tried to use the file roller to install the gstreamer plugin, but alas it says I need libid3tag.so.0 and libmad.so.0. I'm off to see the google...

This is how I got it working.

Go to http://www.freshrpms.net/apt

download and install apt

Open a terminal window, change to root and type :

apt-get update

Then, install synaptic by typing:

apt-get install synaptic

Once that is done, you should be able to find synaptic under System Tools, or by typing 'synaptic' from a terminal window. You need to install a package called 'gstreamer-plugins-extra-audio' and whatever it depends upon.

This will get mp3s working for rhythmbox.
