RHEL 6 GUI Issue & Fedora 15 Root Login Problem

Hey Guys...

This is my 1st post n I am also new to Linux (BRAND NEW), i installed RHEL 6 & Fedora 15 on my laptop (Hardware config, though it doesn't matter, but for info. i7 Q720/4GB RAM/1GB Graphics-ATI HD5450- i know its not hardware problem) but here's my queries:

1. I installed RHEL 6 but I am not able to login in GUI (GNOME/KDE). I tried yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" but it gave message "No GNOME Desktop Environment" package found or something like that. basically it didn't worked 4 me, even startx/STARTX is not working, its giving error "-bash: command not found" like that. How am I gonna login in GUI??? Here, I installed Basic Server package, I heard if i'll install Workstation stuff then GUI will work, is that so???

2. I installed Fedora 15 in VM (Workstation 7.0) environment, I didn't created any user & now I am not able to login. its not accepting root user. Any alternative or do i have to reinstall it???

Thanks in Advance...

Sk...

Haven't used RHEL, but it should have come with a support contract (that you're paying for, of course). I'd check with Red Hat on that one.

I don't believe a standard Fedora installation will let you log in via the graphical display manager as root. However, firstboot should run, allowing you to create an ordinary user. You also should be able to log in as root to a VT. Don't know how installing in a VM affects things.

With RHEL I think, that it uccurs any error during intalation, only new clean may solve problem.

What is about Fedora, it was a bad idea don't create any user. About root login, gdm - in this case Gnome screen for entering in system block root login entierly, but kdm - the same KDE - allows it after warning. Finally you may try console login (this option plases below), it in any system allows root login. If you will have secces certanly create a user to avoid similiar problems.

good luck

Thanx for ur reply....
I didn't created user account at 1st boot (intentionally - i thought i'll be able to login as root). VM installation is same as normal installation. now is there any chance that I can create user account or do I have to reinstall Fedora again...

about RHEL, I got a copy from my friend, so i guess, no tech support...

RHEL Issue: there was no error during installation (i did it twice - on VM as well as on fresh partition) but nothing worked out...
Fedora Issue: how will i know which desktop i am using (KDE or GNOME)... i attached a screenshot of login screen... there is no console login option also...

thnx...

read the fedora install documentation -- a MUST READ !!!!
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/index.html
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/...ide/index.html

1)-- for fedora 15 & RHEL6
you DO NOT login as root into the gui !
there is NO NEED to and NO REASON TO !
Fedora 15 and RHEL6.0 ARE NOT MICROSOFT
there is no reason to do it !!!

also RHEL6 IS NOT free , it never was and never will be .
you MUST buy a license no if's ands or but's -- BUY A LICENSE !!!
Also rhel6 was not intended for a laptop so not everything might work right .Somethings might not work .

create a normal user account .

not just support
no security fixes
no software updates
no ability to install software
yum will not work
no tools to build software
no nothing
-- mostly useless without the paid for license---
If you do not intend to pay for it then DO NOT USE IT

ScientificLinux 6 is a rebuild from the same source code -- and is free .

the FIRST BOOT is 100% mandatory you need to make a normal user account

RHEL has a trial period at http://www.redhat./rhel/ you can download a trial full functional version for free (indeed, without avalability of any software update)!
