Angry Rhel 6.3, nrpe, xinetd

Hey Guys,

I'm having major issues getting xinetd to work with nrpe for nagios monitoring. I'm a bit of a linux noob, but i've gotten nrpe to work fine on centos machines, sles servers, but for some reason this red hat machine is a PITA.

I started a thread over at the nagios forums and the conclusion is that for some reason xinetd won't start nrpe. We can start nrpe as a stand along daemon but xinetd won't start it.

Here is a link to the thread, it's quite long since we did a bunch of troubleshooting.

I don't even know where to begin on this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion would be to take NRPE out the back and shoot it, bury it, dig it up, burn it and bury it again. It's horrible. And utterly unnecessary. Instead (IF you really do want to use Nagios, (which I'd also always urge against as a whole, but anyway...), look at check_by_ssh. This will allow you to connect to a remote system automatically with a SECURE and EXISTING network service. Then there is no nagios specific service that needs to run on the remote system at all. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/lin...by-ssh-plugin/
