RHEL 5 >> RHEL 5 update 5, how to do it

hi all,

i have a system installed on top of RHEL 5.
it appeared that the os is causing a problem to my application and i need to upgrade the os to RHEL 5 update 5. is there a simple way to do it or do i have to reinstall the whole operating system from scratch and rebuild my applications?

ps. i dont know how to compile the kernel if that is the answer and i find it easier to re-install than compiling the kernel!

also what is the best way to take the hdd backup before reinstalling?

Regards,

Hello,

Upgrading a minor version of RHEL isn't hard at all and shouldn't be a problem. Since you're using Red Hat which is not free, you should put the money you've paid for your subscription to work and contact Red Hat Support. They'll guide you through the process.

Kind regards,

Eric

Assuming you have a RH subscription, there are 2 options

1. If you want to only go to 5.5, you can use this guide,
https://code.google.com/p/iredmail/w...Yum_Repository

2. if you're happy to go to latest RHEL (5.7 ?), then 'yum update' as root will do it.

NB:
In both cases, first shutdown as much stuff as possible and then do a FULL backup before updating; downgrading is not supported.
