RHEL 5.5 i386 Installation

Hi

I tried to install rhel 5.5 i386 on my new laptop (hp pavillion 3208tu) with i3 processor, 4 gb ram, 320gb hdd and 1gb graphics card, but did not work :-(

I got the screen where in it asks for the installation via gui mode or the text mode, i selected as gui mode and pressed Enter.
Thereafter it does nothing. It just gives me the error message saying APC failed and some links (linka, linkd, link b etc) disabled, but not sure what do they mean.
I think there is some boot security on my laptop but not sure how to check/customize that.
I hv been facing problems from last many days.

Please suggest!!!

Thanks
Piyush

RHEL 5.5 may not have support for all the hardware in your laptop as it's quite new, why not run Fedora with virtualisation and create a RHEL 5 vm ?

Since RHEL5.6 has been out since last Nov, why not install it. 5.6 will have significantly more hardware supported. The major problem with Fedora is you face doing a clean install once a year(still officially advised for version changes). This is because each version of Fedora is only support for thirteen (13) months. After that there are no official updates of any kind. Compare that to RHEL/Centos 5.X which has support at least until 2014.

As your Laptop is of new configuration, may be RHEL 5.5 doesn't support those hardwares. I recommend you that if you just want to learn Linux then you can use VMware Workstation, Virtual Box etc. to create your lab environment. These softwares are quite easy to learn & manage.

Spell your words out, please.

The i3 processor? Did you read the specs on it, specifically the part where they tell you it's a 64bit CPU, and you're trying to load a 32bit OS on it? http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=46472

Try first loading a 64bit OS. And you don't describe the problem very well...you say it gives you an error message, but does it let you continue? Does the load work? If not, post the EXACT error(s) you're getting, and what you've tried. Also, if you're not planning on purchasing a license/subscription to RedHat enterprise, then you should not be using it. You will get NO updates, patches, bugfixes, etc., for it at all, ever. If you absolutely need RHEL, then load CentOS instead, which is virtually identical. If you don't NEED RHEL, then load Fedora, openSUSE, or Ubuntu...something that is designed for 'consumer' grade hardware, and has better support for such devices. Again, RHEL/CentOS are designed for servers...hardware support for sound cards, bluetooth, etc., isn't going to be as automatic/supported, since such devices are very rarely put onto servers.

I did read the question carefully. Did you? Specifically:

"Some links"?? "Etc"??? We can't guess as to what you're seeing. Is it "Failed to Locate"? "Failed to Load"? "Failed to Initialize"?? What??? And you STILL don't answer what I asked. Again:
  • Does it let you continue?
  • Does the load work?
  • Do you NEED RHEL, and are you paying for it?
  • Have you tried a 64bit distro, for your 64bit CPU?
