RH9 updating the kernel

my current kernel version is 2.4.20-8

I downloaded a file 2.4.22.tar.bz2 or something like that, so I bzp2ed it and try to run (use) it. It came back with a msg saying it couldnt run because i didnt have 2.4.21

so i got a file 2.4.21.tar.bz2 and bz2ed it......no good either.

so now i have 2 files , patch2.4.22 and patch2.4.21.

so can some one tell me what to do with these files??

i thought i would try and have a go at it myself and looks like i got nowhere.

thanks

Read the kernel howto. It's avaiable on tldp.org and pretty much everywhere else.
You have downloaded patch files. You can patch the source for version 2.4.20 with the 2.4.21 patch, and once that's done you can patch it up to 2.4.22 using the latest patch. You might be better off just downloading the whole linux-2.4.22.tar.bz2 archive though, that's the complete source (no need for patching).

I just upgraded/updated my RH9 kernel from 2.4.20-20.9 to 2.4.22 over the weekend. I went to www.kernel.org and downloaded the linux-2.4.22.tar.bz2 and then just followed the HOW-TO that is in the RED HAT section of this website and it worked perfectly.

This way you can set it up so you still keep your current kernel around to boot into if you have problems with the new kernel.
