RH9 "remounting root filesystem in read-write mode"

I have just installed Red Hat 9.0. It appears that the installation completed successfully but upon rebooting, the system hangs at "remounting root filesystem in read-write mode".
I reinstalled and encountered the same problem. All three installation disk passed the mediacheck.
Oh, and I should mention after waiting about 2 minutes, the computer appears to be locked up. It does not respond to ctrl-alt-del or the power button on the front of the computer.
