RH9: Problems loading graphical login
 

Hello,
I'm still trying to get RedHat 9 to work on my computer... I finally got that done, and tested it and it worked perfectly. Well, I then moved the computer (yes, I turned it off first) to a different part of my house, so now it has a different monitor, mouse and keyboard. Well, it loads everything, starts loading the login screen (the blank screen + mouse show up), and then everything goes black.

Anyone know what could be causing this? I'm starting to suspect the monitor (because the new hardware check didn't pick it up when I moved), but I don't know if that would cause it or not.

Sounds like the new monitor isn't quite as able as the old one, meaning the video timings that worked with the other monitor won't work with this one, have you tried the original monitor in the new location just to see if it works?

I'm assuming the new mouse is of the same type of connection eg: ps2 or usb or whatever the other one was, although I doubt this would cause X to bail on you.

Have you tried booting from the install cd just to see whether the installer still comes up properly?

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried booting from the CD and noticed a couple things:
1) It auto-detected an "Unkown Monitor"
2) When it started the X Server, the comp just suddenly rebooted

A couple more details I should've mentioned first:

I'm trying to connect two computers to the same mouse, keyboard, and monitor by using some sort of Linksys device that accomplishes this. One Windows comp, on Linux. However, Linux doesn't seem to like the new monitor, but it does still work on the old monitor.

What surprised me is that previously I had two hard-drives in the same computer, one for Windows and one for Linux, and it worked fine. It turned out to be a pain to have to shut down and restart to get into a different operating system, so I thought I'd put them on separate computers.

Unfortunately, the monitor I used when I just now installed Linux on has lighting problems (the brightest setting it can go to is really dark), so I can't use that monitor (it's a Compaq MV500). The one I'm TRYING to use is a very unknown monitor, the only brand name on it is Shamrock, and Windows doesn't recognize it, and I've never found drivers for it online.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do/what might be causing this?
