RH9 over MDK

Hello everyone.
Just got a question to ask.

I currently have Mandrake 9.1 installed which is
coexisting with WinXP. I was wondering if it'd be
possible to install RH9 over the existing Mdk
installation and replace Mdk just like that.

Thanks for reading.

just in case anyone wants to know why i'm doing this -
1) I've had enough of Mdk in my life. None of the versions
ever worked fine on my Toshiba 1800 laptop. There's first the
video card problem, then X froze, then now with Mdk 9.1,
the greeter is completely crashed.

I was eyeing at Debian/OpenBSD but i worry about hardware support for my relatively new laptop.

I think there wont be any problem, just put the RH CD into ur drive and follow what they tells,u can delete whichever partition u want with disk druid and redhat will, ofcourse, will install a new boot loader.
Or did i make it too simple??Am i wrong??if yes some one please correct me.

fist of all, your configurations are quite right if you're having that many problems with mandrake. i've never had problems like that with any system i've installed it on. you seem to have the wrong drivers installed for your video card. that's why xwin has problems. yes redhat9 is very easy and well supported but if you plan on using xwindows, you'll be very disappointed. the GUI in redhat9 is very resource intensive. it runs slow unless you have at least 1 gig of RAM installed. it'll run with less, but you'll see, it's slooooow. very disappointing actually

Dont scare him off...I wonder how many people in the world of redhat users is having 1gb RAM...

Daniel Han 08-02-2003 01:28 PM

1 gb RAM!?

Ouch! I GB of RAM is a little too much isn't it?
Anyway, most of the time i use the console more than
the GUIs for most tasks. I only run some app with GUI
only when I had to like XMMS -- it doesn't have a console
version does it? If it does have one, I'd be glad to use it.

I realized the same slow-xwin dillema in my MDK9.1 too.
I think basically GUIs are just pain in the ass. Shells get the job
done faster...

Neway, thanks for the answers. I'd be grabbing the ISO soon
and be well on my way to using RH9.

yes it is a bit much ram to have but try runing the gui of redhat9 on a system with say 256megs of ram then install redhad7.3 on that same system and compare. redhat9 drags compared to 7.3.
i had no problems with the gui in mandrake9. runs just as smooth as ever.

ksgill 08-02-2003 01:34 PM

I have redhat 9.0 and 512MB RAM. I have about 312MB free whn my system is running (with a couple of applications open). Redhat doesnt drag with 256MB Ram. I find that it runs better than mandrake on the same system.

TheWalkingDead 08-02-2003 01:38 PM

are you in the gui or command line? i have a p4 with 512megs of ram and the gui in redhat9 is noticably slower than previous versions.

ksgill 08-02-2003 01:41 PM

GUI and it runs smoother than mandrake. Now, redhat doesnt eat your RAM your graphical desktop does. I use Gnome..some people complain about KDE eating up all the RAM..so maybe you wanna use GNOME

Daniel Han 08-02-2003 01:51 PM

glad to hear 256mb is cool...

Glad to hear that 256mb of RAM is adequate for the darn GUI.
I have 256mb (surprise!). I just hate it when GUIs drag like hell.

One more thing.
As i've mentioned, i have a Toshiba 1800 laptop,
and a 14.1" screen. The problem is -
I realize (under Mdk9) the screen tears every now and
then while I'm in Xwin. The tears are usually thin (spotty)
horizontal tears . They appear and go away almost
immediately, but i do realize their occurences.
What's happening? I am sure that i chose the right
monitor and the correct video card and drivers.

Video Card: Trident CyberBlade XP Generic
Monitor: Generic Flat Panel LCD Screen

Is something wrong here?
I've been using Mdk under this condition for almost
3 months now, still no smoke (i sure hope not) coming
from the LCD screen though.

If you use GNOME in RH9 it isn't too slow, RH seems to like the GNOME DE, KDE isn't bad I use KDE on RH 9, with a 1.6 ghz Laptop, 256 MB DDR RAM. If you want speed try ICEWM, WindowMaker, or any of the lighter DM.

ksgill 08-02-2003 02:56 PM

Yeah KDE is a memory hog in rh9
