RH9 Installation

Hi,
After trying the installation and then perusing these forums for answers and finding answers to other ppl's questions, I'm wondering if I'm not in over my head...But if I :study: ...

Anyway, I'm starting to think there's something "up" with my cd rom drive. I'm trying to install RH9 and have dual boot system, with WinXP. I couldn't get very far, it let me choose my language, then my region, then what media I was installing from, and when I chose cd rom drive, it said it didn't detect the drive, to put the cd in (which it was) and click "ok" to continue. Well, it wouldn't let me out of this, and it wouldn't even eject my cd. I had to unplug and rip my battery out (laptop) to reboot. I changed my BIOS settings to detect the cd rom drive first...I didn't even know what that was five hours ago! I chose graphical installation as I don't know any codes for text...Any advice would be appreciated, but please talk to me like the :newbie: and long time Windoze user that I am! Also, I know I have enough hard drive space for a partition, but I didn't even get that far.

So then I tried to install OpenOffice from the cd and that, too, didn't seem to work. Gosh, I've installed programs before, usually via download from the web but I know I've used this drive to install things before....this is a VERY new computer. Compaq Presario 900, XP, AMD Athlon XP Processor (1.2 gH) 30GB hard drive, 256 MB SDRAM.

...and my confidence was all 'up' cuz I figured out how to set up Firebird and apply the Flash/Shockwave patch...now I feel completely inept. :( Thank you in for any help!

Hi Shallot!!!

It's very possible that the images files/CD's you have are damaged. I believe you've got them from the internet. Sometimes they got broken. You could either check the CD's to see if they are intact. I believe that into RedHat Installation (right when you boot the first CD) there's a program to check the CD's integrity. (Somebody corrects me if I'm wrong, maybe it's in another distribution). There might be some tools for testing those images at RedHat's homepage.
The safest way to burn images into CD's, IMHO, is with CloneCD or Nero. Many other Windows CD recorders burn images with a lot of Windows junk on it. I've many CD's that can be read under Windows, but not under Linux in the very same machine... God knows why.
I don't think your CD-rom is bad though. It's a pretty good computer. It could be, but my guess is that the images are corrupted. Check them first

Good luck

Hi, guys, thanks, but I guess I should have mentioned the CDs are from the official boxed set, they weren't burned by me or any other...."human?" I bought the full boxed set in the big red box from amazon.com, I'm sure it's possible that they are still srewed up, but I"m sure they were part of a mass production and so a lot of them would probably be srewed up in the same way.

It's definitely not my cd rom drive, I figured out how to install Open Office, really simple, it's just been a long time since I've installed anything from a disc! :) I'll keep checking, any oher ideas would rock!

Thanks,
Shallot

Shallot,
if you bought the official box, register and get the help from the red hat website; i'd doubt that the original CDs are bad, though there's always a tiny prob; my suggestion is to check the hardware compatibility list:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...install-guide, even if your CD Rom works fine with other OS, it could be that it's not supported.
last but not least, you could try to burn images of them and try again;
cheers!

Thanks, itzamna, I did register and send them an email, just thought this might be quicker. :) Plus an actual dialogue...
