RH9 GNOME Panel Empty?

Hi everyone-
I have a lab of RH9 clients set up using a RH8 NFS/NIS server. My problem is that when I log in on to this one specific machine, my panel at the bottom (with the "hat button") is fine, but on any other machine after I log in it is just an empty gray bar. No buttons, clicking does nothing, I can't start applications or even log out (without ctrl-alt-backspace). What's wrong? We have recently been getting "lock" errors and scattered erratic behavior (hang-ups, etc). Any ideas? Thanks!
