RH9/FC2 dual boot

Hi all,
I have two hard drives, the first one has XP while the second has RH 9. I just installed FC 2 on the free space available beside RH 9. I did not opt for swap for FC 2 since I read somewhere RH9's swap space can be used by FC2 (kernel 2.6.5-1.358). I didn't even install the boot loader when asked in FC2 installation. XP and RH9 start alright. I then went into RH 9 grub.conf and edited it to include and start FC2 on bootup. My problem is that I made grub entry in RH 9 but when i try to boot FC 2 it says RH9 on kernel 2.6.5-1.358 (which is FC 2 kernel) and it give me a lot of failed messages and does not start X.

Here's my grub conf.

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd1,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hdb2
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=1
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd1,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux 9 (2.4.20-8)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.4.20-8.img
title Windows XP Home Edition
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
title Fedora Core 2
root (hd1,4)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img

Here my hard drive info

/dev/hda
hda1 ntfs

/dev/hdb
hdb4 Extended
hdb5 size 102 MB ext3 (this is /boot of FC2)
hdb6 size 14912 MB ext3 (this is / of FC2)

hdb1 size 102 MB ext3 (this is /boot of RH9)
hdb2 size 22003 MB ext3 (this is / of RH9)
hdb3 size 1028 MB linux-swap

Please help!!! ASAP

I'm just taking a bit of a guess here, but I think that grub is looking for a copy of vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 on /dev/hdb1. What happens when you copy vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 and initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img from /dev/hdb5 to /dev/hdb1?

I actually cleared that partition of FC 2 (its now a free space) but i want to install it cleanly. I didnt wanted to mess up my RH 9. If I install again, do i need /boot and swap for FC2. Also advise if I should make a primary partition or extended partition for FC2.

mascdman you are may be right because when i booted FC 2 from grub it started and gave a lot of failed messages. After that it came to the login prompt and said
RH 9 on kernel 2.6.5-1.358

I am newbie so dont know much about grub conf. I felt I might mess so i just installed RH 9 again and left free space to try out any distro in future.

You can reinstall FC2 on hdb6 with hdb5 as /boot. You can use hdb3 for FC2's swap space. I'm going to take another guess and say this line in grub.conf is the problem:
Code:
title Fedora Core 2
root (hd1,4)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
From what I've found searching around Google, root=LABEL=/ will always be translated to the RH9 root (which explains why you're getting RH9 on 2.6.x). Try changing your grub.conf to read
Code:
title Fedora Core 2
root (hd1,4)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=/dev/hdb6 hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
