RH7.3 configuring video

Hi there,

I have just installed RedHat 7.3 on a drand new Dell Optiplex GX270T machine. I cannot seem to get the video card configured properly. I have downloaded and installed all the RPMs available on redhat.com.

The video card is an integrated Intel 865G. I downloaded an rpm from Intel for this chipset and installed it, but when I use xf86config, the listing does not provide this video card.

Currently I actually do have the resolution I want (1024 X 768) but only at 8-bit colours. I would like to be able to utilize the maximum abilities of my video card.

Also, I do not have redhat-xfree86-config (or whatever the correct variant is). Is this a standard component of RH7.3 or is there another tool to configure things (besides xf86config)?

Thanks for your help

Which XFree86 version do you run? You can check it using 'rpm -qa|grep XFree' command from a terminal. In my Mandrake I get this output:
Code:

$ rpm -qa|grep XFree
XFree86-4.3-8.2mdk
XFree86-devel-4.3-8.2mdk
XFree86-libs-4.3-8.2mdk
XFree86-server-4.3-8.2mdk
XFree86-xfs-4.3-8.2mdk
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-8.2mdk
XFree86-100dpi-fonts-4.3-8.2mdk

The most important thing - version - is in bold. For your card, you should be running XFree86 version 4.3. If you have older (with no upgrades in your system after installation, it's nearly certain), you need to upgrade your X.

Dell optiplex GX270 Red Hat 7.3

I had this problem but this worked for me (see the list in post nr. 2 in the link below). It seems to me that the main thing here is the BIOS configuration, that is to change memory allocated to the graphic card from 1MB to 8MB. After I did that I could use 1600x1200, but only in 16 bit, but it's an improvement
