Question RH RPMS and SAMBA help..

all.. i am trying to understand how to use the RPMs on the RH 7.2 discs.. i am trying to install SAMBA.. i dont see it installed as of yet.. (how can i double check??).. i can go to sama.org and start from scratch but i am trying to give RH the benefit of doubt that they supplied me with what i need to continue..

helppppppp.. i need to make linux server talk to w2k server.. then use a printer on the w2k network..

i am trying to learn what this system can do for me so i am touching all the bells and whistles..

r

You can open a package/software manager like Kpackage in KDE or gnorpm in GNOME to look through the installed software and see what's on and not on your system. RedHat does come with Samba but if you didn't choose to install the servers or it specifically, you'll need to mount the install cd (not sure which one it's on) and install the rpm. The package managers are nice to look through, but if you want a flawless install of the package, open a terminal window and use rpm -i packagename.rpm from your mounted cd directory.

I don't really have any clue as to why (in my experience) red hat's package manager and I guess Kpackage in general can't install an rpm right. Mandrake's software Manager is nice, but all in all the console is the safest anyhow. Just ignore the error..The package in general should be fine, unless you get one that someone made wrong, not too often though.

I generally stay away from the GUI package managers... every one of them seems to have some little quirk to it and I don't wanna play around when it comes to this stuff.

Here's a run-down of the common commands:

To install:

rpm -ivh <package.rpm>

To upgrade:

rpm -Uvh <package.rpm>

To list all packages:

rpm -qa

To search for a package on your system:

rpm -qa | grep <search string>

To list all the files in an installed package:

rpm -ql <package-name>

To find out what package installed a file on your machine:

rpm -qf <filename with path>

To get information about an installed package:

rpm -qi <package-name>

Hope that helps.
