Smile RH Linux 8 pico ; text based login

I have 2 questions. 1) I had asked yesterday how to access pico text editor. The two responses I got did not work. The response to whereis pico was pico: similar response to pine.
2) How do you get to the text based linux from KDE? I am not asking about the KDE command prompt.

1) install pine
2) run "init 3" ("init 5 to get back) or press "Ctrl+alt+F1" ("Ctrl+alt+F7" to get back)
