RH Enterprise 5 SCSI Tape commands

In reading on-lne articles I find that I should have a set of "st" commands. Do I need to download the mt-st package from Red Hat? Will the Enterprise 4.x version work?

During start up the system identifies the hardware for the tape unit, but in using the GUI to "explore" the file system, the system tells me that I have no media in the device, while there is a blank tape in the device. Do I have to make a file system on the tape before I can use it?

Thanks in advance,
