RH 9, nvidia FX5600, x starts, can't get GNOME interface

I am migrating from Win to Linux. I managed to get a few machines up and running without issue until I tried to install on a pc with the nvidia FX 5600 board. I got it installed using the text install, got the nvidia update installed, got x started. Once logged in I get the X interface but cannot get the GNOME desktop to load or showup, etc. XF86Config has been edited, GLCore and Dri out, glx is in, "nvidia" replaced "vesa", etc. I was reading something last night and cannot find it again about editing a file and specifying the $DESKTOP parameter (prefdm or something similar). I see others with similar issues, anyone have some help?

The /etc/sysconfig/desktop file specifies the desktop manager to be run, such as:

DESKTOP="GNOME"
