RH 5.2: Am I a cheapskate?
 

I have WinTel machine that I plan to convert to a dual-boot system. I intend to add a second 80Gb drive, devoting 30-40Gb to a linux partition. I presently have a copy of RedHat 5.2 that I purchased a while back. It would bother me for that purchase to go to waste, but if I would be better off downloading a new distro, I would do so.

Does anyone have any advice?

FWIW. I don't need bells and whistles. I like vanilla.

Ehh.. at least download RH 9. You're not a cheapskate - you just supported Linux and never got around to using their great product. At the very least I would go with RH 9, that is if you wanted to keep the RH name.


Slackware is really cool, you should check that out.

Well, 5.2 is quite outdated. If you've got the bandwidth, download Redhat FC3 (Fedora Core 3) http://fedora.redhat.com/ or
Mandrake at http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-us/
for a new user friendly installation experience and support for a wider range of hardware. CD-Burner required unless you feel up to making boot disks and doing a network install.

The most important piece of hardware that will need support is a cable modem.

Are not so new distros like RH9 widely available? I don't have any particular attachment to RH, it is just what I have taking up space at home.

I suggest that you give Conectiva 10 a try. It is a Redhat based distro with slice of Debian.

It is easier then windows to install and it has decent hardware detection.
