Restart mandatory after installing updates?

On Windows, 99% of the time you have to restart the server after installing updates. In my brief experience with Linux, its never told me I had to. Do you ever have to restart after installing any for Linux? I'm using redhat specifically if that matters.

No Linux Doesn't requires the restart until you do a major change like installing or upgrading newer version of linux like
RHEL 4 to RHEL 5 ...simply u can restart the specific service if you made specific change to that service ..like configuring network ,ssh etc.

So even if i upgrade a kernel I dont need to restart, it kicks in automatically?

I noticed sometimes the update process restarts services automatically too.

If the kernel is updated you will need to restart to enable it. It is one of the very few times that a restart is mandatory.

OK, thanks Xavier. Seems like everything else if updated restarts itself during the update process if necessary. Thanks!
