Resolution "not optimum mode"

I have fedora 2 wish a samsung flat panel monitor.
When I installed fedora on a test drive with an old monitor I didn't have any issues, but with this combo, when I try to make the resolution smaller (1024x768, instead of 1280x2024) I get a box in the middle of the screen that says
"Not optimum mode
Recommended mode 1280x1024
60hz"
that won't go away.
It will change, and I can make the box go away for a minute by resetting the monitor, but I can't do that every 60 seconds, so I have to change it back.
Any suggestions on where to start looking for a fix? I really don't know where to begin.

Are you sure that's not a diagnostic produced by your monitor? Do you get the box even if you're not using X (i.e. not in the GUI?).

I think you are right. I saw that message on a similar monitor. You need to disable it using your On Screen Display menu.

Arrrggggghhhh! My monitor isn't listed under the hardware section of my display... ~~pouting~~
Ok, thanks, ya'll! Off to search some more!
Any more hints for when I trudge back in disgust would be lovely. :D

Hi.

This is a hardware problem. Linus works just fine with this monitor.
