resolution in rh7

grr. i've been using linux for 3 years and i've been stuck with this problem forever. I'm using redhat 7 with a compaq mv520 15" monitor. if i set the resolution above 640x480 it looks like this

the area labeled x is what i can see. when i move my mouse to the edge of what i can see the screen scrolls over revealing what i couldn't see before. think of it like this: if you covered a photograph with a piece of cardboard with a rectangular hole in it.
the obvious problem is that rh7 does not have my monitor's specs programmed into it's Xconfigurator BUT i have previously entered the specs in manually and nothing changed. WHY????! i love linux sooo much but i can't get the full experience if i have to keep moving my mouse all over the place to see my desktop. perhaps somebody is having the same trouble and can help me?

please help. thanx
