resolution change causes login/shutdown issues

Hello,
I recently decided to switch from Windows XP to SUSE 9.3 and my copy of suse arrived 2 days ago, after learning about linux partitions i got the install done onto my system.
Everything installed and working no issues, except one thing, when i change resolutions from default 800x600 to what i usually run 1600x1200 (perform test and it works fine), after i reboot to apply changes, when the system comes back up i have to login to a really basic looking suse login screen - autologin does not happen anymore, then the OS loads, but when go to shut down, the reboot and shutdown buttons are gone and the only option i have are end session.

Is this a security problem that a regular user can't shutdown, but what i can't understand is that it happens after i change screen resolution.

...after my last install i created a system backup, the changed resolutions got the problem and then restored to the backup and all was good again.

any help/ideas welcome.

Thanks!

Ok, can you post the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? It sounds like a configuration issue.

Also, with Linux you don't need to reboot to apply resolution changes :P. You can do it on the fly.
