reset graphics card to generic
 

hi,

did a forum search... nothing obvious came up, sorry if this is a faq

Ubuntu 7.10... all installed fine, was pottering along, not totally happy with resolution, wanted higher... wondered what'd happen if I chose a new graphics card (pretty much at random)... thought it might revert to previous mode unless new mode accepted (as in WXP for example).

Anyway the screen went all funny, completely illegible, and now does so each time I boot... I can boot to recovery mode (command line prompt) but don't know how to reset the system to a generic graphics card (svga maybe) so that I can basically return to the status quo ante.

NB: my command line skills are not good... I don't for example know how to edit using vi (or even how to stop editing and save file)... have a Linux for dummies to hand. But pls be v explicit... am a newb!!

I'm not sure if you still get this option when Ubuntu has been installed but here goes. At the initial startup menu try pressing F4 and choosing one of the available vesa modes. This should give you a 'default' graphical display, you can then change your video driver once you have logged in. If the display size you've chosen from F4 doesn't work simply reboot and choose another size.
