research question about window managers

kinda of a linux newbie here

I was doing some basic research on the difference between window managers and desktop environments like Gnome. As I understand Gnome has an underlying window manager that it utilizes like Metacity, or on some distros Sawfish.

My question is can other window managers be set up to be the underlying windowing system to run in gnome. For example FVWM, ICEWM or blackbox.

or is Metacity and sawfish the only window manager that can be configured to interface with Gnome?

and where does x11 lay in the whole scheme of things??

If you run nautilus over some other window manager you might get a similar functionality?

no i was asking is there a way to configure the other window managers to interface with nautilus the way metacity or sawfish does in the background? so that specific options for a give window manager are now available that was not there when metacity was handling all the window managing functions?
