repartitioning hard drives
I've heard that you can repartition your hard drive without buying programs and without losing data on your computer. is this true? if so, how do I do this? (I wanna use linux instead of evil unstable microsoft!:tisk:

gnu parted!

with some linux distros it is not even necessary to repartition before you boot. They realize you do not like windows and do not want to lose data. When your start the install it asks you whether you wish to install on an existing partition or on a new partition. If you choose a new partition a partition is created for you by the installation.

Which distro's are those? (Currently struggling with redhat partition). I'm just about at the point where I say screw it and blindly erase my HD with no backup.

Mandrake is one however there are some other distros that do not need to be installed on your hard drive but instead use a LiveCD. An example if this would be knoppix. pretty cool

actually, i am downloading knoppix right now. it it taking FOREVER! arrrrgh!! thanks for the help, ill download mandrake instead :)

glad i could help you get a linux distro installed. I am always glad to help a new user start with lunix and to help the battle against m$.:D

bah! i talked to my dad a bit too much about linux. now I can't download it because he thinks I'll mess up my computer. i'll probably never use this site again, at least until I move out... then i'll use linux. until then, adios amigos.

dual boot and don't tell him. It worked for me. After you get it up and running you can show them. If you choose to do knoppix instead of mandrake it will be really easy for him not to notice. Later you can move on to more advanced distro once you show your parents you know what you are doing.
also if your dad thinks that linux is bad for your computer ask him whether he has heard about somthing called windows. |
