Removing unwanted desktop /mnt/hd's

I cannot seem to delete the icons on desktop that say "hard disk/mnt/hd. This item is gone an unmounted "was a test with iomega external scsi drive." In properties of this device it shows 0 for size. Tried removing them directly from mnt/ but came back upon reboot. Does not have "delete" on right click.

I am assuming the you are using the KDE Desktop environment.
In the KDE setup screen, look for the section on what types of devices are displayed on the screen and deselect unmounted drives.

Yes using KDE on mandrake 10. In section you specified. These items are considered mounted hard disk partitions?? Unchecking mentioned made them go away. Only showing 2 drives in MCC Mount points partitions. But yet showing all these extras... Are these the extra partitions wizzard installed???? EX {swap....root....home....boot}

It depended on what you selected during the install.

Unlike windows which the OS is usually only one partition, linux can have many depending on what type of setup you desire. The swap partition is the same as the pagefile.sys aka virtual memory with W2K and XP. linux uses a partition instead of a file which tends to be faster. The / or the root partition is sorta like c:\ except there isn't any d or e etc. etc. Everything in linux is considered a file and all files fall under the big tree with root at the top including the CDROM and floppy drives.

/home is where your personal data is located. All regular users should have a home. The /boot partition contains the kernel file and other associated files required to boot the system.

Might be of some help:

Or just google away
