Removing apt proxy in ubuntu

Hey guys, I use my laptop(Ubuntu Jaunty) both at university(behind a proxy) and elsewhere(no proxy). I am able to remove the proxy of everything EXCEPT apt.

I just use system->preferences->network proxy and click apply system wide. But apt-get just does not honor this. It keeps trying to connect to that proxy.

1)I even entered gconf-editor and removed several instances of the specific proxy setting. Still, it tries to connect to the same proxy.

2) My etc/apt/apt.conf is blank.

Where is it reading the values from? so very wierd. I have read many many threads on this problem but none come up with a satisfactory solution. Those who do, just say "yay! I solved it!" instead of actually saying what they did.

Please help! and thanks for any suggestions!

If you mean in the gconf-editor, yes i did. I removed all references to the proxy address in the HTTP_PROXY attributes.
But it still tries to connect to that same proxy. So weird!

Thanks
Suvir
