remote destop - lan performance
 

Hello everyone,
I need some advice about remote desktop performance in a home network.
Setup:
PC1 is located in the living room
Now I need to work on PC1, PC2 and PC3 with a display size of 1920x1200.
At first I thought of buying a DVI KVM switch but in order to do so I need to bore a lot of holes.
Is it possible to use software like freeNX or VNC? When using NFS I can write files with a speed of 65mb/s. Is this enough bandwith? What would be the limitation of such a setup?

Using vnc can be a bit laggy, performance is a lot better if you set stuff like disable desktop background on remote pc. Even so it's very usable.

Let me perhaps give an idea with a practical example.
Let us assume for instance that I want to play games and view HD content on PC2 and edit videos or work with photoshop on PC3. Is this something possible with remote access or am I limited to word processing or similar 2D work?

If it's graphically intensive the lag would be too intense (well for me it is), I don't think vnc was designed for those purposes. I'm not sure a solution exists that will allow you to run remote graphically intensive apps with the same or similar speed as if they were installed on your local machine. There may well be a solution (i've yet to find one) and if there is I envisage it being a tad too expensive to justify for home use.

Please don't take my comments as the be all, and end all. I don't know all there is to know about what's available in the world of remote administration apps. :)
