I have just bought a acer netbook. How could I setup a remote connection to another pc somewhere else. Thanks.

For ssh sessions, install Putty.

What version of XP are you running? I assume this is your desktop per your previous thread.
If running XP pro you can use windows remote desktop protocol using linux rdesktop application or VNC.
