Remote Access to Ubuntu Desktop from Windows

I am having the following problems:

I have tried installing vnctightserver on Ubuntu and then installing the viewer on my windows machine but when I try to connect it rejects the connection....

I need to remotely access the ubuntu-desktop on my ubuntu server LTS 10.04..... I have tried a number of guides but none are working for me....

I have a firewall installed (iptables) but the neccesary ports have been opened up but my server still rejects incoming vnc connections.

On a side note I do not have physical access to the server so all setup needs to be done via SSH...

It should work, pretty much like you've described. Check out this LQ blog entry and see if you've covered all the bases:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-windows-3065/

A couple of troubleshooting tips:

1. Check your logs (e.g. $HOME/.vnc/*.log) for errors or warnings

2. Check your logs for the ABSENCE of anything (this would tend to implicate the firewall)

3. Try tcpdump to see if any packets are getting through

I checked the log and no errors or warnings and my firewall has the appropriate ports open..... I ran tcpdump and packets are getting through....

Unfortunately the blog post you linked to gives instructions on how to setup vnc but when I tried following the instructions it said "No Release Candidate Available"

Just to check if its an iptables issue; disable the firewall and then give it a try.
