Question Reinstalling ubuntu

I'll try and keep this as short as poss. I am quite new to linux, back in the UK I had a friend who could do it for me. However, now I am in Austria.

The problem: Most times when I boot up, no OS can be found. Also when I am able to boot and actually use my laptop, within 5-10 minutes everything closes and I just get error messages when I try to open programs (input/output error). I have tried reinstalling but every time the instalation gets to the partitions stage, there is just a blank window and all the options are greyed out.

Any ideas guys??

First of all, Backup all your data and check the backup.

Then I'd recommend you check the disk for bad blocks.

check for bad blocks
Code:
# e2fsck -fc /dev/sda
sda being the disk you want to check. Change if necessary.

then reboot and check your filesystems with
Code:
# shutdown -rF now
Come back with your results.

Best of luck.

Thanks man, whatever it is that you, in all your wisdom, told me to do has worked. Now I have big multi coloured worms to play with.

Vielen Dank!

I am grateful but there is another wall pass, when I try to install it gives me this:
The creation of swap space in partition #5 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) failed.

I was told to possibly reboot and try again. Is this feasible

You seem to have serious problems with your disks. Did you check the reports on the commands you ran above?

Can you swap the disk in the box with a new one?

Everything is back to normal for the second day. I was able to restore the linux, I think.

There was also something black and about 3.5 inches long that was leaning out of the laptop, I pushed it back in?? But yeah, thanks a lot guy, quick and useful replies.
