[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I'm a "Newbie" to linux. I just installed Redhat 7.3. I'm using the KDE desktop. Right after I log in, the computer would freeze and nothing would work. I re-installed three times and I get the same problem. I don't know what else to do!!!!!!

if you can get to a command line then edit the default runlevel to 3 by editing /etc/inittab.
you will see a line that says id:5:initdefault:
change the 5 to a 3 and save it and reboot
if you choose to reinstall, be careful to set it so it doesnt run xwindows at startup, and also be careful to be sure you set up x properly

If you are newbie it may be easier to get different graphics card and reinstall system, than trying to tackle program in commandline

Unhappy KDE Desktop Freezes

I switched to the GNOME desktop and it worked fine. I think there is something wrong with my KDE because it freezes after login.

I had a similar problem and swapping out the video card fixed it.

I simply had to give up on 7.3 it was giving me too many problems, first off it froze up on me a number of times, then sometimes when it went into standby and I brought it back it gave everything a weird tint i went back to 7.2 and no problems there, now if i can only figure how to get that nifty up2date applet on 7.2 i would be set

7.3 froze , 7.2 worked

That is weird + weird + very weird. I could take it vice versa or let say different distro. It must have been something in your setup.

I think that if you don't upgrade from RH 7.2 to RH 7.3, but rather backup your /home partition and wipe your partition(s) with Linux on it (them) and then do a workstation or custom install you will be good... I let RH 7.3 format my Linux partition after trying to update and having problems with my videocard in 7.3, so I did a "fresh" install and it works fine... I can't say if it will work in all situations though...

IMO, RH seems to not install too well sometimes. Maybe you should try a different distro? Just a suggestion
