registrar kaput. how to rescue a domain?

One of my prospective clients called in a panic. His registrar/hosting company has gone under and everything has been shut down so using dig on his domain only reports the verisign root server:

Code:
jaith@sansebastian:~$ dig domain.com all

; <<>> DiG 9.5.1-P3 <<>> domain.com all
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
;; Got answer:

I'd like to help this guy salvage his domain. What can be done? At the moment, I've encouraged him to get an account with a new registrar like godaddy and try to initiate a domain transfer from there.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I'm afraid you can't do much, if you cannot contact the registrar somehow.
Usually domain transfers are allowed between master and slave name servers. If they are still up you can try:
Code:
dig axfr domain.com @master > domain.db
Btw the query you ran is not correct, you can use:
Code:
dig domain.com any
Regards
