Are you installing Php using the dpkg command, or the apt-get or aptitude command?

If you are using dpkg, try this instead:

Code:
sudo apt-get update <-- this will refresh your repository caches
sudo apt-get upgrade <-- this will upgrade your system
sudo apt-get install php <-- this will install php
You may have to put php5 instead of php after apt-get install.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org and please, make sure you give plenty of details and stay in touch!

Now that I'm a little more awake...

It looks like your dpkg is corrupted. Maybe someone else can add in their opinions. To me, it seems like dpkg might need to be reinstalled. I don't even know how something like this would happen.

The only way I can think to reinstall dpkg is to compile it from source or reinstall the whole system. I hope I'm wrong or misreading this :/
