reformatting old ubuntu disk partition

Hey all-
I was dual booting XP and ubuntu for a while, but ended up wiping the ubuntu install because it wouldn't save my password and I would have to go into a root shell every time to set the pw and log in. Once I wiped the install, I tried to merge it with my XP NTFS partition, but any windows utility won't touch it because it's ext3. Is there any lower level formatting tool you guys know of that will allow me to completely wipe the filesystem from the old ext3 partition and merge it with my XP NTFS one???

Cheers,
Jarrod

You could boot from a live cd, and use gparted to reformat the drive to NTFS or fat32
Take a look at puppy or DSL
