Redhat partitions
 

It seems that up to 15 partitions can be created on a SCSI disk with Redhat, how many on a IDE drive, and whats the max partition size on SCSI and IDE with Redhat. I see its maybe 2gb for swap, but is it also 2gb the maximum for all other partitions ?

wrong wrong wrong. up to 4 primary (logical) partitions can be created (or is it 5?) and UNLIMITED amount of extended ones. What you think 15 are the mount points. default to RH. once you install the os you can mount any partition onto any directory on your hd.

Also there is no limit on size, and your swap should be twice your ram amount.

hmm, so given one disk, and one disk only, there is no point in making more than 15 partitions, as i wouldnt be able to mount the 16th one... ?

wrong again. you will not be able to mount them during the install, cause you'll just run out of mount points, but once you are inside your system you can mount a partition for each directory on your drive if you feel like it.

on the other hand, why would you even need 15 partitions. the greatest i've seen (or can see reasonable) is 7.

Well, I have 10 on one and 9 on another (distro freak)..

oh, i forgot to say that those 7 are for the same distro.

If you have several different ones, then you can have quite a few of them, but it also becomes your full time job to keep track of what is where.

Fancypiper.. thanks, I found the below which confirms my thoughts about the limits on numbers of partitions per disk.

"Unlike primary partitions, logical partitions must be contiguous. Each logical partition contains a pointer to the next logical partition, which implies that the number of logical partitions is unlimited. However, linux imposes limits on the total number of any type of prtition on a drive, so this effectively limits the number of logical partitions. This is at most 15 partitions total on an SCSI disk and 63 total on an IDE disk."

I knew it was a bunch and more than on scsi, but I didn't remember the specific numbers.
