did you install a gui ?
rhel is normally ran in the terminal without a gui installed
what version is it and on what hardware
RHEL 6.2 is the current

IF you installed "gnome desktop"
a black screen ( most of the time) that the 3d card is not fully supported or needs to have settings manually set

seeing as RHEL is not free and you ARE paying $49 to $299/year for the REQUIRED support license
did you ask your paid for support help ?

I am using RedHat Enterprise Linux ES (2.4.21-4.ELsmp) which must be about more then 6 years old... I have no idea when the last time it was booted up before today, it was just thrown into my lap with a best of luck with that... Its running on a dell poweredge with the following specs: http://support.euro.dell.com/support...g/j0323aa0.htm

As far as I know there is a user interface installed on it as I have not been told otherwise. There is software on the server that I am supposed to use also very much out-of-date... Is there anyway I can check if there is any interface on the server??

What is your assigned task?

ie What is your boss asking you to do with this very outdated server?

I am supposed to set this server up to put their new content management system on for their website. They are using a developers software called "Extendo Business Suite" which they have the rights for and is installed on the server already and I have installed the developers handbook on my windows pc as well. Unfortunately I have not heard of this software before and it is very difficult to find any information on it.

I figure if I can get the server going I will be able to learn the rest on my way through trial and error....

Well it sounds like the server works ok and you are able to log in (post #1) so what is your next step? (John VV has some good advice in his post, if it is important to you to have a GUI environment; most servers don't.)

step 1
you do NOT put new software on that old rh install
you BUY RHEL 6.2
see pricing guide
http://www.redhat.com/rhel/purchasing_guide.html

red hat did a name change back in 2002
RH7.2 changed to RHEL 2.1
so RH6 predates that
the kernel version " 2.4.21-4" is very dead
2.6 ans 3.2 are the current
However from your kernel
it looks like this is RHEL3 ( also past it's end of life ) and it is NOT supported any longer
Quote:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (Taroon), 2003-10-22. Uses Linux 2.4.21
so if you MUST use this very old and not supported ( think of it as running " windows 98 ")
then DO NOT connect this to the internet
Unless you WANT the server compromised and taken over by a bot herder .

I agree. That server needs to be backed up and blasted. It sounds like nothing I would want to use as a development server. If you're having problems now, imagine when users rely on the server. Just install the latest version of RHEL ($) or CentOS (free) and sleep well knowing your server has a fresh clean start to move forward with projects.

Also I recommend starting a new thread with "Extendo Business Suite" in the title. In case someone on the forums does have experience with this software, they might be able to help you. Also there is a helpful forum Search feature.
