Redhat Installation - Xpdf-2.01-8
 

Hello, my friend downloaded Redhat from linuxiso.org and installed it on his computer and it works fine. So he gave it to me and i tried installing it, but, after i have to inserted CD2, it says

"The package xpdf-2.01-8 cannot be opened; this is due to a missing file o perhaps a corrupt pacakage............."

So i tried downloading CD 2 again (because CD1 works fine) and i get the exact same problem! does anybody know what's wrong? :confused: :confused:

BTW, i'm using VMWare, just to see it before i "really" install it...

There might be incompability with the cd and your cdrom drive or a wrongly downlaoded (or burned) image. Have you tried md5summer to calculate md5 of the cdrom? You should compare it with the orginal value found in MD5SUM file in the directory you downlaoded the image from. If teh values differ, there was a transmission problem and the image must be downloaded again.
Does your friend have xpdf installed?

I am also using the VMware to trial out red hat. I am not using a downloaded copy, rather the retail CD, so am ruling out the posibility of it being a CD at this point.

Have tried two different CDROM drives so far with no success. So would like to rule out the drive suggestion as well.

Any other suggestions?

I'd try the cds on another machine (I know that the problem happens in quite far part of the installation process). If you have not installed it anywhere else, it still may be a wrong cd (it's less frequent than when you burn but still, it happens). RedHat in the versions I remember had an option in boot menu (just when you boot the cd) to check if the media is correct. If that option is present in your version, run it.

You may also look into the logs to see what's exactly causing the problem - one of the combinations ctrl+alt+f1 to f5.

And moderator note at the end. Next time when you have a similar problem to someone else, don't post in the same thread. Create your own one. Problem may look similar but have different reasons. Then two problems in one thread mean only mess.

So, instead posting into an existing thread, when you have found a thread with similar problem to yours, make a link to it and include comments (like: "I've tried as suggested in (insert link here), but ....". It'll also help people who try to help you.
