Redhat insall failure
 

I have been trying to dual boot with RH 8.0 and Xp pro. I created a 10g disk partition for RH. When i put the disk in it boots to the install boot screen, however once i go to install using the GUI mode RH changes from a clean GUI to something that looks like it is running in dos. I go through these settings, seleecting keyboard stuff and then i go to install and it says that i don't have the disk in the cdrom, but i do. I tried new burns of the install cd and nothing worked what do i do.

So you've done the partitioning thing, used FIPS.EXE etc. Many first timers have problems getting there so you're doing well!

You say that the installer is basically attempting to install in text mode instead of GUI mode? If this is the case, you're video card was not autoprobed, so the X Windowing system couldn't find it in the list of drivers it had. This doesn't mean you can't run X Windows though! It just means it couldn't find it at the time.

Boot back in to WIndows and get the information for your monitor - type, manufacturer, model, and really importantly, vertical and horizontal refresh rates.

Buy a book on Linux too. You won't regret it.

I think I should have told you that i am installing it on my laptop, a Dell 4100. To partition just clean installed xp and created two partitions one for xp and one for RH. Regardless this doesn't solve my problem with the cd not being read, or is it that the partition that i made isn't being read. In your response to buying a linux book, i have several, including all the documentation for RH 8.0. It isn't helping me much though. Any more help would be great thanks.

Ugh, what do i do know?

What stage do you get to in the installation?

i get to selecting the location to install from and then when i choose cd it takes me to an error screen saying i don't have a cdrom.

OK, this sounds a bit odd.
1. You partitioned your drive into two NTFS (or FAT32) partitions.
2. You insert CD1 into your drive.
3. You boot from the CDROM and you see a "Welcome to redhat" or similar.
4. It asks you for keyboard, locale, a few others and then asks you where the install medium is located

Is this about right?

It's doing the same thing to me, Red Hat 7.2 installs perfectly on my system.

1. It boots from my install floppy and goes to the welcome screen
2. it then (despite the fact that I asked for a graphical install) goes to a text install.
3. then it asks if I want to install from the CDROM or a hard disk, choosing CDROM, it then tells me that the install CD is not in the CDROM drive.


and that's all I can do.

i tried for about an hour today and the system wouldn't do anything. i even messed around with my bus configuration. KnightAbel it sounds like we have the same problem, where did you get your iso from? maybe that is it.

I didn't burn the CD myself, my linux teacher did it himself. I'm not sure where he got the iso. I'll ask him what he thinks on Monday.

anyway... I messed in my CMOS, played around with the install options, no effect. -.-' kinda annoying. heh.

if anyone has anymore ideas, I'd be willing to try them
