Redhat and Windows XP
 

Hey everyone,

you probably have read this type of thread multiple times, but here it goes.

I have a laptop with Windows XP Pro on it. I want to put Redhat on it as well. I downloaded Partition Magic and setup a fat32 partition for bootmagic. But, here is where I need some advice.

I have been reading several of the usenet group postings and they are saying various things about partitions. Should I create the partition myself?

for example:
c: 15gb for windows
d: 10gb unformated

Or just reduce the size of the C:\ partition to free up 10gbs of space and let redhat create a partition off of the unused space?

If you have RH 8.0, just leave some space unformatted and start installing RH. It has an option that automaticly partitions the unformatted space.

Your allocation looks good an' iceman47 is right. Just leave the 10gb open and have Disk Druid do the work. Make sure that you check the work its done though. It will leave out the /var, /home and /usr partitions.

One question. Why FAT32 with XP? XP was written to work with the NTFS file system. It would make sense if your upgrading from Win98, but otherwise ...

Maybe it's better to have FAT32 at this time for Shane, linux can't write to NTFS if I'm correct, so now he can exchange stuff between partitions if that's needed.
