Redhat 9 to Ubuntu or Fedora Upgrade

Running Redhat 9 (2.4 kernel) on X86 box. Using Samba, CVS, MySQL, Apache and Tomcat with very little traffic (development testing).
To upgrade to "modern" distro do I need to start from scratch? Or is there a way to upgrade to Ubuntu or Fedora

You would have to start again, the leaps between RH9 and Fedora are too great to simply upgrade. And Ubuntu is based on Debian rather than Red Hat. So you'll need to backup everything you need to save and reinstall. If /home is on it's own partition, that will save you some bother

Print out your config files. They may be of some use, but mostly you will be starting from scratch. After RH9 RH split into Fedora (free) and RHEL (pay), Fedora 10 will be released this fall. You can get away with jumping one version with minimal issues but jumping that far is just too much to expect a high success rate.

Since Fedora only supports any one version for about a year, you may want to consider Centos. Centos is RHEL(Red Hat Enterprise Linux) with the logos removed. It is free to download/update and has a five year support life.
