redhat 9 login as root but what next?
 

okay, i need a book to walk me through this. redhat oreilly does not do it. they say nothing about after login. what is the # thing? i would like to get to the gui so i can operate the system. or is that not an option? not really familiar with dos commands or whatever linux calls it. can anyone offer a good chat line to talk to someone in real time and also is their a book out there that will go step by step. oreilly does not do it.

i would really like to leave windows and join the force but i have been trying for hours just to log on to the system and i finally log on as root it ask for some number. none of this is covered in oreilly. can i log on as a name i like ? i would like to choose my options!

i will continue reading oreilly to see if it helps otherwise i will wait for someone to help.

Well if you've logged in as root the # symbol means it's waiting for a command. To get to a GUI you could try the commands startx or init 5, but I think Redhat 9 would have done that already if it were an option. My guess is that something went wrong, maybe Redhat doesn't come with the right driver for your video card or something. Error messages are the key thing in linux. If you don't learn to love the error messages...it's hard. The error messages usually tell you where the problem is and what you should be looking at. Even if they don't make sense, write them down and then type them into Google. Often other people have been in the same situation and if you're lucky they'll lead you straight to a solution. thanks for the help i finally found my problem it was the driver for the monitor it was not listed and it wont take a generic one. what to do my monitor is very very common. i think it is sad that they dont have that driver update very sad

by the way all my friends that run windows with their computers have the same monitor as me . i think i am just going to wait until some company besides microsoft can write a complete os that doesnt crash i would pay 1000.s for it

most people like linux because they think they are rebels get real nothing is compatible . very sad. i would never suggest linux any version to anyone until i package came out with drivers that support common everyday hardware. when i had to wait 2 weeks to get my monitor because they were sold out everywhere on web that is pretty common eh. ohwell, just had to bitch because linux aint that sophisticated yet. heard something about unix might give it a try.

Monitors don't require drivers - the 'drivers' that windows uses are just files with lists of the refresh rates and resolutions that the monitor can run at.

All you have to do is edit a file to get your monitor to work.

P.S. Would you have expected your monitor to work with, say, a Mac, or an Amiga? Me neither.
There are compatibility lists for each distrobution on the Internet, and a quick Google search should reveal if your hardware is compatible using updates. I agree that hardware support isn't quite what it should be, but that's not RedHat / Linux's fault; it's the fault of the hardware manufacturers for not releasing the specifications and allowing people to write drivers.

First step after logging in as root, in my opinion, is to type "useradd" and follow the instructions to create a new user, then log out of root.

I strongly recommend you don't bother logging into GUI as root, and definitely don't go online as root. You can do everything you need to do as a regular user, just do "su" when you need to be administrator

thanks for the help everyone. i was in a bad mood because i spent all weekend trying to login in and then i found out my monitor wasn't activated or something. i will continue to fight off the darkside. i have all semester to learn redhat so i will continue to battle on.
