RedHat 9 kernel update
 

Hi!

I want to update my RedHat9 kernel from the version 2.4.20-8 to the version 2.4.20-31.9. I have downloaded the new version in rpm package.

What to do now?
Simply type the command "rpm kernel-2.4.20-31.9.i686.rpm"?

Pretty close; rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.20-31.9.i686.rpm

This will install the new kernel keeping the old one in place.

FYI: Red hat Linux 9 is a dead OS (all free support is now ended), why are you still running it. You have the option of running one of the freely available and supported RHEL3/4 100% binary compatible clones like CentOS or Scientific Linux instead???

Where can I download RHLE 3 or 4?

RedHat Enterprise Linux is not free - it is only available from Redhat, and you have to pay.

You can get Centos, which is exactly the same, just without the Redhat trademarks.

Depending on what your intended usage is, RHEL or Centos may be a bit old since they are intended for stability rather than cutting edge. You can get Centos from www.centos.org.

If you like Redhat, then you may like to consider Fedora which is the successor to the "free" Redhat distros like RH9. The current version is Fedora Core 6. Alternatively, distros such as Ubuntu may be a good choice.
