RedHat 9 Install ...
 

Hello ya'll,

I'm trying to install redhat 9 on my computer.
I burned the iso's on cd and i boot off cd 1.
i get to choose if I want to install with graphical interface or text mode.
i first chose graphical since I'm new to this.
then I got my first error ...

"Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 48:05"

of course I searched google and some forums for an answer but an exact answer I did not get.
I tried some things I saw on the web like "root=/dev/hdc then came my second error:

"Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel."

and I of course searched for that too.
I found that I needed to create an "initrd" dir in my linux partition.
How can I do that when I haven't even started installing yet ...

I hope someone can help a little newbie with this :-)

well...i dont know much about the anaconda installer, but i dont think you should be trying to give it a root drive before its installed, perhaps your iso is bad...it sounds like the disk might be corrupted or else there is some piece of hardware, either your cd drive or your hdds that isnt compatible with linux (which theese days is a very rare thing) perhaps you can borrow an old cd drive from a friend or swap one from another computer, if that doesnt work try downloading a new disk from a different mirror

well... I suppose initrd and kernel should be on the CD, and the problem is that either the installation program can't read them or then it's facing problems with using your HD? I'm not sure..first time I hear of that "Unable to mount root fs" problem.

What if you try installation in text-mode? Do you get the same errors?

Same problems yeah ...
