RedHat 9: CPU fan runs continuously

Hi all,

I have a dual boot setup on a SONY Vaio desktop - Win2K and RH 9.0. When I logon to linux O/S, the cpu fan starts and doesn't stop. The m/c initially came loaded with Win XP home, but I later formatted it and installed Win 2K. I had the same problem that time but I was lucky to find a patch to fix that. Now I tried searching the web for any similar patches for Linux, but couldn't find any.

Anybody encountered this problem & found a way around it?? Any pointers will be appreciated..

Thanks,

-Girish

I wouldnt bother screwing with a patch for the fan, I would want my fan to run continuously.

Agree with above... Last time my cpu fan stopped it cost me 175 dollars for a new cpu..Im sure the fan can speed up or slow down depending on the temp of the cpu but you would NEVER want the cpu fan to stop in a desktop comp.. maybe a laptop in sleep mode.. which would save a whole minute or less of battery time...
And of all the comps Ive seen, includeing sony's, the cpu fan speed is usually controlled by the BIOS with the ablity to be controlled by the OS's software.
