Redhat 9.0 Rpm & Synaptic Confusion?

Confused newbie !
I use synaptic to install kernel-module-alsa, alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-lib-devel, alsa-utils, alsamixer and xmms-alsa 1.2.8-3.2fr. Are these not actually installed? When synaptic is used I should be able to go to my /etc/modules and see the new module, but it's just the original. What the H&%$@ is up with Redhat? It,s been 8 weeks and I still can't get my Realtek alc650 6 channel audio working and I haven't even started on getting my keyboard to work the way it was designed. Ready to give it up and go back to Windows XP where everything works. Any help for this frustrated Newbie?
