RedHat 9.0 Internet ADSL access by a shell


Hi
I installed redHat 9.0 witout Gnome or KDE on a old computer. I would like to be abel to connect to my ADSL modem (DHCP) troguh a shell in order ro tun ssh,telnet,ftp etc.

I plan to get some simpel WM as blackbox. The WM i use now is xterm (?).

So how can I do this by shell or xterm?

If you need to set up your dsl from the command line type the following

adsl-setup

once complete type

adsl-start

I tried.
One I run the text wizard does the system ask for username and password. I have either.

After install do I run adsl-start - nothing appens.
I run the adsl-status
"Note: You have enabled demand-connection; adsl-status may be inacucurate. adsl-status: link down (can't read ppoe PID file/var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe

I have runed this as root. This have been down in a xterm under TWM (?).

The adslmodem (Alcatel) seems to work just fine (tried it on my windows computer). The network lan card have a green light to....

Any idés.

Do you have one interface (whichever you specified in adsl-setup) configured for dhcp (ie no address or anything)? You can also use the command ifup-ppp0 to start the service once configuration is complete.
