Can you boot with a rescue disk and tell us what happens ?

The only time I rebuilded a RAID, it was from the RAID card setup utilities, and when I rebooted, LILO worked fine.

Maybe lilo/grub need to know details about the new disk?

You can also search on Dell Talk. There are very interesting forums about RAID & linux.
