Redhat 8 Menudrake equivalent?
 

Does Redhat 8 have a menu editor like Menudrake in Mandrake? I cant seem to find any feature to edit the menus. Thanks in advance.

Also, how do I access my NTFS partition in RH8? I have the latest kernel and all that but I dont see anywhere to access the partition.

Redhat 8 doesn't ship with menu editing support. The code was broken when they shipped, and it was fixed 2 weeks later iirc. Life sucks sometimes :) The Linux menu system is somewhat in flux currently anyway, it'll all be sorted out in 8.1

For now, if you absolutely MUST edit the menus, you can do so by altering some text files.

For NTFS see linux-ntfs.sf.net - they have instructions specifically for Redhat 8. Most other distros ship with it included, dunno why the 'hat don't.

I dont really need to edit the menus right now, but I found it odd that a mainstream "user freindly" distro like Redhat didnt have that feature. Redhat has a more uniform and "finished" look and feel but doesnt seem to be as easy at system settings and preferences like Mandrake 9.

Welcome to Linux.

The basic issue is that currently Linux the platform is being unified after it was horribly split in the desktop wars of the late nineties. The work is going on at freedesktop.org and the halfassed solutions that KDE and GNOME came up with independantly are thrashed out in a shared forum, and better specs are figured out that are desktop neutral. This is happening for:

- Menus
- Icon themes
- Toolkit settings (fonts/colours)
- System tray icons
- Startup notification
- .desktop files (which tie in with the menus, but also mimetyping, file associations, startup notificaton etc)

Expect breakage in these areas, as well as other core technologies (like IPC) over the next few years as kde and gnome are joined back together at the tech level. It needs to be done, but until it's finished desktop Linux will still be something of a construction site.

Mandrake doesn't exhibit these because it uses KDE by default which is lagging behind GNOME (default on redhat) in standards compliance. Redhat are spearheading the standardisation efforts, so they are affected first. The next few versions of mandy will be hit too, though the end user will be shielded to some extent by temporary hacks that are being put into place.
