Question RedHat 8 install freezes

Hi, everyone! This is my first post on this forum. (As it is an install problem I have, that is rather natural).
I am a newbie to linux and I hope to change that if someone can help me with my problem.

I have downloaded and burned the 3 first CDs (twice). When I try to install, all seems to be fine for a while but when it has copied ca 300mb it stops. It seems to be unable to locate a file. It usually stops during "package: setup-2.5.20-1" . In one of the consoles I get the message "IOError 2 occured copying redhat-menus-0.26-1.noarch.rpm: no such file or directory"

The MD5SUMs were fine and the mediacheck in the beginning of the install told me all was fine. So I don't think there is something wrong with the CD's.

I have a:
AMD Athlon XP 1600+
256mb, 60Gb

running Win98

Well, it sounds to me like you have valid media. I don't know how effective the media checking in the install program for RH8.0 is, but that's all I know to do in terms of checking your media.

I had this same issue when I installed RH7.2 for the first time (it was my Linux install, too). My problem was bad media, though. My burner was archaic at the time, so I went out and bought a Lite-On 48x and tried burning off the same ISOs, and everything went fine after that.

I doubt that media is your issue, but if you have a friend with a different burner, you might want to try getting them to burn the CDs for you. Or you might try installing off a different CD-ROM/DVD drive.

Also, I have had install issues with some Windows OSes before just due to motherboard/processor combos. When I had this issue, my friend had the exact same mb/p combo and he couldn't install Windows 2000 either. We just gave up on it. Perhaps there's a compatibility issue.

And, another thought - Are you overclocking? This can cause issues sometimes as well. If so, try setting to default speed during the install and then working on an overclock afterward.

They're probably not the right answers, but I'm a newbie myself, so that's all I can come up with.

Thanks for the answer gauge73.

Im not overclocking so that's not the issue either.

It is possible that it might be my CD-ROM drive though. I've had some problems reading burned CDs before. But the install usually stops at the same place every time (if the install options and packages are set to the same).
When I've installed with other options I've gotten the message:
"(anaconda:88): GnomeCanvas-CRITICAL **: file gnome-canvas-path-def.c: line 1142 (gnome_canvas_path_def_any_closed): assertion 'path != NULL' failed "

I can try changing the CD-ROM drive just in case.

Just a correction:
This is not the most usual error , I've just gotten that one too:

When I've installed with other options I've gotten the message:
"(anaconda:88): GnomeCanvas-CRITICAL **: file gnome-canvas-path-def.c: line 1142 (gnome_canvas_path_def_any_closed): assertion 'path != NULL' failed "
